About

The Canton Public Schools, as they were called at the time, planned the details for a new elementary school in the Market Heights district in 1949. Construction began in 1950 on Mason Elementary, named for Jesse H. Mason -- who was superintendent of the district for nearly 20 years, from 1928 to 1947.

Total cost for the new building, including landscaping and architects' fees, was just over $400,000. Construction was far enough along by January 1951 that three rooms were opened, for first, second and third grades. By September of that year construction was complete and the school opened to grades K through 8. The school was dedicated on November 18, 1951.

Mason continues to serve its neighborhoods with pride and distinction. The school enjoys tremendous support from parents and families and has an active PTA group. More than 200 boys and girls are served each year by a staff of about 25.
